Restore Your Damaged Tooth

Restore Your Damaged Tooth

Unfortunately, a damaged tooth does not repair itself and almost always requires help from your dentist to return to working order. A dental dental crownscrown can restore your tooth and provide numerous benefits in various situations. Learn more about dental crowns and what they can do for you with Dr. Ron Solomon and Dr. Angela Burleson-Ott at Cornerstone Dental Group in Cincinnati, OH.

Do I need a dental crown?
Your dentist may suggest a dental crown in a variety of situations. Mainly, crowns protect a damaged tooth to keep it from becoming further damaged in the future. However, there are some other common reasons for requiring a dental crown, including:

  • stabilizing a tooth with a large filling
  • holding a dental bridge in place
  • topping off a dental implant to replace a missing tooth
  • improving the appearance of a misshapen or discolored tooth

If your dentist thinks you need a dental crown, you will most likely require two dental appointments to complete the procedure. A consultation with your dentist will give you all the information and scheduling you need.

How does a tooth become damaged?
A tooth can become damaged many ways, with the most common being injury or decay. Decay begins on the outside of the tooth and eats its way through, layer by layer. Once the decay reaches the tooth’s inner pulp chamber, it begins infecting the blood vessels and, eventually, the tooth’s nerve. As it grows, the decay begins damaging the tooth’s natural structure, causing it to weaken and, in time, break. At this point, your dentist will probably suggest a root canal to preserve the structure of the tooth, then a dental crown to protect it from further damage.

Dental Crowns in Cincinnati, OH
Dental crowns require that the tooth have enough original structure to support the crown itself. Your dentist will need to prepare the tooth to receive the crown by shaping it into the same form as the inside of the restoration to ensure a snug and secure fit.
